Summer School 2023

This year’s summer school will take us to the famous island of Naxos: Here, the god Dionysos once found poor Ariadne, left behind by Theseus. Here, young Zeus was raised to become king of the gods. And here, Leto came through searching for a place to give birth to her twins, Artemis and Apollo. We will explore these and other myths during our summer school, reading the ancient texts that retell them as well as visiting the ancient sites related to them on Naxos, Mykonos and Delos. You will practice your Ancient Greek in daily conversations, inside and outside of the class room, while at the same time enjoying the beauty and the hospitality of modern Greece. For the last days of our program, we will travel to Athens and visit timeless sites like the Acropolis and the ancient Agora where once Socrates cross-examined his fellow citizens about the true nature of virtue.

FAQ

For whom is this class?

Learners of Ancient Greek who are interested in the active use of the language. If you don’t yet feel comfortable speaking Ancient Greek yourself, that’s fine, you can just listen. To understand what’s going on you should, however, have at least some basic knowledge of Ancient Greek (equivalent to one year of university studies).

Another point: As you can see, the program combines language instruction with site visits and daily activities outside of the class room, because we believe that you learn a language best through memorable experiences. So if you are interested in learning Ancient Greek while exploring ancient sites, this summer program is for you.

What does the course fee cover?

The course fee covers: language instruction; transportation during excursions (on Naxos, to Delos and Mykonos); entrance fees to museums and archeological sites we will visit.

The course fee does not cover: travel expenses (coming to Naxos, going from Naxos to Athens); accomodation; daily living expenses.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you cancel before May 15, 2023, you will receive a full refund minus 50€ administrative fee. If you cancel after May 15, 2023, you will receive a full refund minus 50€ administrative fee minus potential expenses we will have made on your behalf (like booking a room, transportation and buying entrance tickets).

What is your experience teaching Ancient Greek?

Both Jenny and Rogelio have ample experience teaching Ancient Greek classes online and in person. We taught summer programs for the Paideia Institute, New York, and the Polis Institute, Jerusalem. The Naxos summer program this year will be the third time that we organize our own summer school within Triodos Trivium.

If you like, you can find out more about us on our About page and on our YouTube channel.

Do you offer scholarships?

We don’t offer specific scholarships but if you are really eager to come to the summer school and can’t afford it, please contact us and we will find a solution.

Where will classes be held?

Our class rooms will be in the historical heart of Naxos Town, in the “1st Gymnasium of Naxos” (1ο ΓΥΜΝΑΣΙΟ ΝΑΞΟΥ, ΟΔΟΣ, Σωκράτους Παπαβασιλείου, Νάξος 843 00). You can see the exact location here: GoogleMaps.

In addition to our reading sessions we will also have daily outdoor activities in Ancient Greek like a walk to the beach or through the old town of Naxos.

What language will you use during class?

Classes and activities will be conducted in Ancient Greek. Organizational information will be discussed in English.

What will we be reading in class?

We will mostly read myths taken from Apollodoros’ “Bibliotheke”, the Homeric Hymns as well as other texts that are related to the sites we will visit (Herodotus, Pausanias). You will receive a reader that contains all the texts but if you like buying books, we can recommend the edition of the Homeric Hymns in the Loeb Library (Homeric Hymns. Homeric Apocrypha. Lives of Homer. Edited and translated by Martin L. West. Loeb Classical Library 496. Cambridge, 2003).

What sites are we going to visit?

Please take a look at the detailed program (here) to see which sites we will visit.

Will we see Ariadne?

We can’t promise you that we will see Ariadne but we will definitely look out for her. Maybe we can spot her sleeping somewhere on the beach?

“Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos” (John Vanderlyn)
