ἡ λέξις τῆς ἡμέρας (ιδ’) – Ancient Greek Word of the Day (14)

December 31, 2021 by Jenny

ὁ/ἡ σῦς, συός – a (wild) boar, a domestic pig
(= ὁ/ἡ ὗς, ὑός)

There exist wild and tame pigs: All the pigs, however, grunt saying „oink“, whence one says proverbally „to not even say oink“, i.e.: to say nothing, to stay quiet.
