ὁ γύψ, γυπός – a vulture

ὁ γὺψ ὄρινς μέγας ἐστὶν ὃς πολλοῖς αἰσχρὸς δοκεῖ· νεκροφάγος γάρ ἐστιν. Γοργίας δὲ ὁ σοφιστὴς καὶ εἶπεν ὅτι οἱ γῦπες „ἔμψυχοι τάφοι“ εἰσίν.

The vulture is a big bird that to many seems repulsive because it eats the dead. The sophist Gorgias even said that vultures are „living graves“.
