Description

At first glance, the plot of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon, one of the plays within the Oresteia trilogy (Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, The Eumenides), seems to be rather simple:
After the fall of Troy Agamemnon, commander of the Greek army, returns home to his palace in Argos accompanied by Cassandra, the prophetess. Despite Cassandra’s prophecy, Queen Clytemnestra, longing to avenge the deaths of her children (especially the scarification of her innocent daughter Iphigenia to Artemis), invites her husband to take a warm bath and murders him.
However, as we come to read the actual words of Aeschylus himself, the seemingly plain horror story becomes increasingly complex. By reading and enjoying the original text of the play we can see its characters emerging from the darkness of Agamemnon’s haunted palace, revealing their deeper motives and desires.
The primary purpose of these sessions is thus to read, understand, observe, and discuss the profound reflections on human and divine justice, crime and punishment, guilt and innocence – as proposed by the author of this timeless masterpiece.
